Finding my Own Voice Through Blogging

Everyone is given a voice on the web.  It's very refreshing, really, since information is accessible to everyone regardless of location.  Aside from the The Average Jane blog being used as a stress reliever for me, it is also my way of sharing my experiences that I think other people would be interested in knowing too.  And with technology as it is today, it's so easy now to build a website.

Over the couple of years I started this blog and from the online friends I've met, I've learned that there are a number of considerations you have to take when deciding to create your own website, most of which, admittedly I overlooked when starting the blog.

Thinking...

1. First step to creating a website is to figure out a niche.  Do you want to write about food?  Fashion?  Or just simply share your experiences with other people?  Find what you are passionate about and the ideas for your site's content will surely follow.

2. Deciding on a domain name and search for a web host.  In my opinion, domain names should be personal and should also be part of what you intend to write about.  It's like naming a baby.  If you plan to go into this in the long run, you should at least give your website a name you'll love right?

3. Searching for a web host is another tricky issue you have to think about.  A lot of people have their own ideas on what works and what doesn't.  For instance, purchasing your own domain name ensures that you are given more liberty in designing your website.

I heard from one other blogger that you should purchase your own domain name once the site reaches it's 2nd month since it means that you are writing and thinking of maintaining it for a long period.  The testing phase is over and you're in for some serious writing.

4. Design your website to suit your preferences and personalitites.  Fill it up with loads of content you find interesting and want to share with others.

Be passionate in what you write about and for sure, like-minded individuals will flock to your site.

  4. Good thoughts on building a website. We have the same experiences when it comes to blogging. One mistake that I did is that I didn't bought a domain name for my blog when it is still young.

Now, I am afraid to change the URL of my blog because it might cause my blog to be buried under the Google and Yahoo searches.

    1. I was infomred of that problem too. The same blogger (apologies as I forgot his name) mentioned that's why you should buy your domain namain by the 2nd month. Since starting yout PR ranking from scratch may not be as painful. =)

  5. I agree; it's all about the passion for what you really want to do. On my case, I'm doing blogging because I love writing and sharing what I do or experienced. The last thing that I want to feel from blogging is feeling that I am 'required' to make a blog entry or so and so because if that happens, it would feel like work and I don't want that :|

  6. I was inspired by a fellow blogger to buy my own domain through blogger pa rin so that the transition is as seamless as possible. I am not that good with settings and HTML so, I didn't canvass anymore for cheaper domain price.

My friend said that you should not wait too long, like when you're site is at PR 3 already. It will be back to square one once you changed the domain. So, while I was still at PR 1, I took the plunge...now it's back to PR 0 (still better than N/A hehe). At least, I didn't lose that much. Hopefully, I can have better ranking on the next update.

  11. Blogging is fun. We use our blog as a Diary but without the cringing bits. If people want to read it ok as we don't mind sharing.

    Good post. Thanks!

  14. Nice tips! :) I have trouble with the niche side since I often write about different things, hehe. I agree with naming the domain part. It is just like naming a baby since this name will be the one you will be known for in the world wide web. :)

  16. Admittedly I started blogging without really thinking much too. 8 years ago, blogs were personal spaces not the same now where it became something you can do to earn money.

Which is why I'm a bit miffed when I see so-called bloggers with not much interesting content, merely posting paid-post links. *sigh*

Regarding domain names, I suggest waiting 6-8 months instead of 2. If you are regularly blogging that long then you are ready for a pro name. I haven't bought a domain yet because I tend to lose intrest after a year :3
