The Last Person Who Got a Taste of BonChon Chicken in Manila...

... would most probably be little old me.

My apologies for the overly melodramatic blog post title but I'm just so happy that I finally got a taste of a BonChon chicken!  And now I finally understand what the buzz was all about.  J

Like almost everything else mainstream, I admit that hearing the buzz created by this fried Korean wonder when it was fairly new to our shores, did little to encourage me to give them a go.  I'm hardwired that way, I guess.  I never could immediately grasp the "in" thing (in fact, I'm still reeling in disbelief over the hullabaloo about that Gwiyomi thingy.  It's just plain weird, people!)


But I digress.  Having found ourselves within the vicinity of the Ayala Triangle Gardens (which, by the way, was also my very first visit, too) and us with rumbling tummies, we set about locating a good, not crowded place to eat.

Fortunately, BonChon Chicken was the only place with a decent number of patrons (and tables) inside.  So we settled in and had a taste of these scrumptious little treats.

Each person in our party got a 2-pc BonChon Chicken drumsticks / thigh ricebox meal C (Php145).  Patrons are given a choice between having the Soy Garlic or the Spicy variant.  I personally prefer the former because it's sweet and savoury at the same time. 

I find it also really fascinating that the chicken can still sustain a crispy skin even with all that wet marinade (whether also basted after frying, I'm not quite certain) in place.  It's delicious and really satisfying.  Perfect with a pipping hot cup of rice and no more additional sauce needed.

Meal also comes with a choice of drink.  Choose the iced tea.  It's not your usual powered tea drink.

Chapchae (Php75)

Chapchae (Php75) is a popular noodle dish in Korea that uses glass noodles mixed in with soy sauce, garlic, and sesame oil, among others.  It's a little sweet, too.  Sort of reminds me of Sukiyaki without the soup.

I usually associate Fish & Chips with the British, having heard a number of times how popular this street food is in the UK.  So imagine my surprise when I found this little gem in the BonChon menu.  An ala carte serving, costs around Php125, comes with a few sticks of fried fish and a handful of fries. 

Now, this version was something totally different from the others I've tried before.  Seems like BonChon also uses the same marinade that they have for their chicken.  It is good, though, but is also slightly sweet, a world away from the usually more savoury rub when cooking fried, battered fish.

Everything we've tried, so far, has been really delicious.  Move over KFC!  Me thinks I may have a new fried chicken love affair...  J

  4. I have tried their spicy squid and fish...have yet to try the chicken...gusto ko naman yung spicy. :-)

  6. BonChon really offers good tasting dishes. My only problem is that their rice serving is very small. Hindi pwede sa mga gaya ko na nasanay sa unli rice ng Mang inasal. :-)
