Mary Higgins Clark's The Shadow of Your Smile

My mom is a huge fan of Mary Higgins Clark, a US-based writer best known for her crime and suspense novels.  She's known as America's queen of suspense, having published dozens of novels, not counting a number of collaborations with her actress-slash-writer daughter, Carol Higgins Clark.

In one of her most recent offerings, The Shadow of Your Smile, Mary Higgins Clark once again tries to delight audiences with her passion for the mysterious and criminal.

In this novel, Monica Farrell, an NY-based doctor is faced with the decision of whether she should testify to the miraculous healing of a patient under her care who is declared free from cancer after the family prays to a decreased nun for intervention.

This same nun is now up for beatification because of the supposed miracles that have been attributed to her name.  But there is more to the novel than meets the eye, for the good doctor is to find out that she is actually connected by blood to this holy nun.

I classify most novels of Mary Higgins Clark as light reading, mainly for the fact that, after having gone through a number of her previous novels, I can easily spot remarkable similarities in her stories.  One of the requirements would be that the protagonist is "beautiful" and is at a successful point in her career.  They also have very dismal love lives at the start of the story but by some divine intervention, they are able to find love in the midst of avoiding her killer.  When faced with danger, lady luck always seems to be on their side and they are often left unharmed, none the wiser of the danger they were in.

This book follows almost a similar format.  Been there, done that.  But if you are interested in some light reading, this book can satisfy, at least to some degree.

I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.  =)

  1. Actually a lot of "bestselling" authors use that formula as well. ;)
